From January 2023 onwards, KippsWare apps can be freely downloaded from this web site, but a licence must be registered in order to unlock full functionality. This applies to both the desktop and Android variants of the software.
Licences are currently available free of charge. In the future, we may institute a charge for new licences, but guarantee that licences already valid when charges are introduced will remain valid without any payment thereafter.
Registration of the first standard licence generates a contingent of four licences. The remaining three may be assigned to further installations of the same app, in either the Android or Desktop variant. The procedure is described below.
Until licence payments are introduced, the contingent of four licences cannot be increased.
The process of obtaining a licence is initiated in the software to be licensed in the desktop software via the menu item "Info / Licence management" and in Android variants via the menu item "Licence Status" in the system menu.
The following licence situations are possible:
The software as downloaded can be installed and used without registration of a licence. The amount of data that may be handled is strictly limited in this case. The menu item "Help" / "About" (Desktop) or "Info" / "About" (Android) specified the relevant restrictions for a particular app. This is intended to give the user an opportunity to examine the principal functions without having to register. It is not intended for serious use.
Test licences are free of charge, are valid for a short fixed length of time (currently 1 month) and are not renewable for the device on which they are installed. A single user may not have more than three active test licences at any time. Test licences do not effect the number of standard licences available to a user. All features of the software are available without limitation during the validity of the licence.
A renewable licence is valid for one year and may then be renewed an unlimited number of times free of charge. If not renewed, the licence may be installed for the same software on a different device, for which the same conditions then apply. This is intended to facilitate device changes.
A permanent licence is valid indefinitely and requires no further contact with the suppler. It is only valid for the hardware device for which it was obtained and cannot be rescinded or transferred.
The licence is verified on installation. Thereafter there is no background communication between the app and the licence server. When a renewable licence has to be renewed, the user initiates the process explicitly.
All licences are currently free of charge. If paid licences are introduced in the future, the price will vary according to the app to be licenced. It is intended that both renewable and permanent licences will be available at the same price. There will be no further charge for renewing a renewable licence.
During the life cycle of the product, we reserve the right to licence significant new features or releases separately. This will not invalidate existing licences.
Test licences will remain free of charge.
A licencee is identified by an email address. A licence is requested from the menu "Info" / "Licence management" (Desktop) or "Licence Status" in the system menu (Android) in the installed software, and must be requested from the device for which it is to be used. The request results in a licence being generated and installed on the device and an activation key being emailed to the specified email address. A data exchange for identification of the hardware takes place directly. We assume the user protects his/her email, and the licence is therefore unavailable to malicious users. The user then activates the licence by entering the licence key in the product software.
The only data stored is the email address of the licence owner and the hardware identification. This is not used for any purpose other for than validating the licence and renewal requests for it, if relevant.
Installing an update to a product that is already licensed has no effect on the status of the licence. The update inherits the licence from the previous version.
Deinstallation of a product does not release the licence (although a time-limited licence is release automatically when it expires). If a product is deinstalled and then reinstalled, the licence remains valid but must be reactivated via the licence management function of the product.
