Pictures of the Thousand Islands area

Around the south-eastern end of Ontario, almost on the Québec border, the St. Lawrence river contains an archipeligo of approximately 1800 islands. The area is known as "Thousand Islands", and presumably got its name before anyone had finished counting. The southern side of the river is in the US state of New York, so the area forms a popular recreation area for both Canadians and US Americans. The most opulent architecture dates from the beginning of the 20th century, when many rich businessmen from New York built weekend houses on the islands or on the southern bank of the river.
